A big thank you to all of you who supported our 19th Festival!
THE G MEN J Edgar Hoover’s boys return to Beer in Trinity fashion playing raucous blues and rock inspired by the legendary Irish guitar hero – Rory Gallagher. But it doesn’t stop there – the Feds play plenty of their own stuff, as well as selections from their other favourite rock bands of yesteryear. Local-born front-man Mark Bond is joined by his son Bert on bass, and Ben Walton on drums. Unfasten your seat-belts and get rocking!
The Dave Kelly Band
Dave Kelly, was the founder member of The Blues Band with Paul Jones, Hughie Flint & Tom McGuinness thirty five years ago. When The Blues Band started back in 1979 Dave was already a seasoned blues artist with a reputation across the world. His first performance was a floor spot at The Half Moon Putney in 1964.1966 he went to the USA and played at Gerde’s Folk City in New York where he was invited to join three bands – but declined – wonder who they were ! On returning from the States he joined The John Dummer Blues Band as lead vocalist and guitarist. It was with The Dummer Band that he made two UK tours backing John Lee Hooker and one with Howlin Wolf also played with Freddie King. After leaving the JDBB late in ’69 he went back to solo performing and toured and recorded with the legendary Eddie ‘Son’ House.
The Dave Kelly band has existed sporadically since 1982 with various line-ups including Mick Rogers, John ‘Irish’Earle, Lou Stonebridge Steve Donnelly, Tex Comer, Ed Deane, Pick Withers, Marcus Cliffe, Pete Emery, Peter Filleul to name a few. The current band is a five piece – all family members.
Harmonica masterclass with Big Azza
Big Azza has been honing his craft as a front man, and a harmonica player with many bands over the last 10 years playing country, pop, soul, blues and swing. After finding his ‘groove’ he formed Big Azza and The Jukesters to play the infectious, toe tapping R&B, Jump Jive, Swing and Blues that he is best known for. He will be running a Harmonica Masterclass in the Mariners Hall on Saturday 8th October at 1pm and will be covering subjects from Practice Regimes to Tone, Band Craft to Equipment and much more. Inspired by a wide variety of artists and styles, Big Azza’s infectious charisma and personal touch always reaches out to everyone in audiences and workshops alike, he teaches and plays with passion heart and soul…….and he is running the Monster Jam with The Jukesters on Sunday again this year.
SWAMPGRASS Love the blues, especially when it is mixed, cajoled and sometimes downright beaten into new shapes and styles with the addition of funk, swing, country and psychadelia. Formed in January 2013, Swampgrass have been gracing festival stages since its inception, a Swampgrass show generally starts at pace and maintains dance floor intensity until the end. The occasional slow song finds its way in to the set – usually a grip and grind blues or soul scorcher – but the aim is to always entertain.
Times they are a-changing. In November 2015, Little Devils decided to re-group. Yoka and Ray left the band. Graeme Wheatley, bassist and main songwriter continued with Sara on drums & guitarist Chris Walker jumping in. He’s an awesome player and had no problem seamlessly picking up the reins (or strings as it were). With the soulful voice of Maggs as dep vocalist we covered existing gigs in early 2016. Due to other commitments, Sara stepped down to be our dep drummer and Dave Powell (Adele, Mumford & Sons etc) joined on the hot seat. Fantastic to have him on board. We then paused to sort things out as we still needed a permanent vocalist…… Enter Muzz whose powerful voice brings a new range to Little Devils songs – her soulful feel defies her tender age. So, New line up = New band = New name – it’s a sea change, ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the……Deep Blue Sea
